FAQs

Who is this project for?
Fabulate is a project for anyone with an interest in the writing and publishing process, or the concept of online collaborative projects.

I'm not a professional writer, can I still contribute?
Of course! We don't want to be elitist, we accept contributions from anyone, regardless of their previous experience. In fact, the more varied the contributors to this project, the more potentially interesting the final result will be.

So how do I contribute?
The first step is to register your account. Once you've registered, please make sure you are up to date with the book so far, then get creative! You will automatically be signed out of the site after a 20 minute period, so it may be worthwhile working on your submission outside of the website, then simply logging in and pasting your submission into the relevant box. Please remember to stick to the submissions rules and guidelines.

What are the rules and guidelines for submissions?
There aren't actually that many! Just remember the following when working on your submission.

  • Submissions can be a maximum of 1000 words only.
  • Your work must follow on from the last published page
  • It must make sense in the context of the book, although there is nothing to stop you creating new characters, changing scenes etc.
  • Please, nothing libellous, offensive, copyrighted or anything else that might get us into trouble.
  • Please be constructive when providing comments on submissions. Abusive or inappropriate comments may lead to revoked reviewer privileges.
  • That's it! (Ed: We might expand on these based on the submissions we actually receive!)

I've posted a submission but I can't see it in the submissions list. Did I do something wrong?
No. Your own submissions do not appear in your list to be reviewed to prevent rating "rigging" e.g. scoring your own submission 10 and every other just 1. This is just one of the many procedures in place to prevent people cheating the system.

Isn't there a danger of people submitting rubbish and wasting peoples time?
With projects like this, there will always be some people who try to take advantage and advertise their own sites or try and offend people. Reviewers (see below) are given the ability to report such people, and if the Fabulate team agree that the submitter is breaking the rules, their account will be blocked.

How is the successful page chosen?
Again, this is down to the community. On registration you are given the option to become a reviewer. Anyone who applies is automatically given the right to review submissions, however, checks are run against ratings each member gives, and if they are found to be deliberately marking other submissions low in order to give their own submissions a better chance of being picked, then reviewing permissions can be taken away.

I didn't sign up to be a reviewer but like the idea of contributing a bit more. Can I change my mind?
Yes. Once you are logged in, from the home page you can click a link to edit your profile. In this section you can choose to become a reviewer. Please note, if you have had your reviewing privileges removed, you cannot get them back by changing your settings here.

Who owns the work?
By submitting to Fabulate, members grant Fabulate a non-exclusive, irrevocable, worldwide, perpetual license to store and maintain one or more copies of all Content placed by Members on the Site. Content may be used in the production of a book or books, in either electronic or hard-copy format. Successful contributers i.e. contributers who's work is selected for any published book, will be rewarded by way of royalties for each book sold containing their submission. More information is provided in our terms.

Spread the word

Please help us spread the word about the Fabulate project. The more authors and reviewers we have, the better the final story will be. Thank you.
